ECO CHURCH NEWS
The ECO-CHURCH WILDLIFE AND GARDEN
GROUP will be meeting on Saturday 21st
February at 10.30am to plan what jobs to do
during the Spring and Summer.
At our last meeting we decided to plant more
wild daffodil bulbs on the field which has been
done. We also moved the bug hotel in the garden and filled it up
temporarily with more twigs and logs. Does anyone have any small
terracotta garden pots that we could use to place in it? We will fill
them with pine cones and leaves, etc. for next winters hibernation of
bugs, larvae and pupa of moths and butterflies.
The planting of the butterfly bank will be planned and possibly a
small wooden sign erected. The butterfly bank will need low growing
plants or herbs. Digging a hole for a potted plant is nearly
impossible due to builders rubble just below the surface. But I have
a plan, which I will discuss at the meeting.
The garden is usually tidied when we have a maintenance Monday.
Due to the overbearing Ash tree, mostly woodland plants thrive.
Other plants seem to fail or are stunted due to the shade. So, we
work with what we have: poor, shady soil, full of bricks. I have been
adding wood ash and old compost occasionally over the years which
has helped.
Now more than ever Biodiversity needs a helping hand due to
unpredictable weather patterns of prolonged wet and drought.
